COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL GROUP THERAPY FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH SOCIAL PHOBIA

This is a short term CBT group for young adults (ages 18-23) who are coping with symptoms of social anxiety and are negotiating important life transitions such as graduating from high school or college, getting a first job, or developing a network of social relationships.

The group will use cognitive behavioral principles and techniques, including:

  • problem solving
  • coping with anxious thoughts
  • confronting fears directly through in-session role plays
  • behavioral exposures in real life social situations in session and out of session
  • social skills

The group typically consists of 5-7 people, and is typically a mix of men and women. The group is 14 weeks and will begin in mid to late May 2010. The group will meet weekly on Thursday evenings.

For more information about this group, please contact Dr. Sandra Pimentel at (212) 246-5022 or pimentes@childpsych.columbia.edu.
